OVERALL PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE JOB

The Campaigns Director will provide clear direction for the development and implementation of the campaigns, within the context of the agreed global programme of Greenpeace world-wide.

MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

1.   Strategic direction and programme design and implementation

As a member of the Senior Management Team, advise on the execution of GP Africa strategic direction and campaign design and implementation in accordance with Greenpeace Africa's agreed development plans, in order to contribute in an integrated manner to the realisation of Greenpeace's overall objective.   

Develop the campaigns section of the annual ODP to be submitted to the GP Africa Board for approval

 

2.   Campaigns development

Guide campaigners in developing short & long term campaign objectives & strategies.

Set up planning processes to implement the programs identified in the development plans as contributing to the GP global priorities

Contribute actively in the development of international campaign programmes, through participation in the Greenpeace International programme meetings and campaign meetings 

Ensure the right balance between highly visible public pushes, direct lobbying and media work

Inform and advise the Executive Director in advance with regard to any initiative that may have the potential to jeopardise the integrity of Greenpeace (legally, financially or reputationally) 

Represent Greenpeace Africa in decision makers/public debates

Contribute to the development and implementation of the communication strategy for Greenpeace Africa campaigns to improve public awareness of the campaign issues, for fundraising initiatives and public profiling of Greenpeace in Africa. 

 

3.   Management responsibilities

Establish structures and recruit campaign staff according to Human Resources policies in order to achieve the objectives of Greenpeace Africa 

Maintain regular flow of communication with each GP Africa campaign location through visits at least once every 4 months and/or engagement of colleagues in frequent exchanges on work status, implementation and reporting

Inspire, motivate, supervise, coordinate the work of all campaigners, action/logistics staff and encourage them to be strategically focused on implementation of the annual plan.  Make sure their work meets the objectives and is of high quality 

Organise, coordinate and evaluate the organisation and implementation of the campaigns through regular meetings, telecommunications, planning and reporting in all GP Africa campaign locations

Set up and evaluate the individual objectives with staff members, and apply all human resources policies, including annual evaluation of line-managed staff 

Develop a Greenpeace and Greenpeace Africa identity for all staffers wherever located and whatever their roles in the organization

As an SMT member, fulfil rights and responsibilities as agreed in the Terms of Reference for SMT members

Ensure proper induction, training and support of all campaigns staff

 

4.   Budget responsibilities 

Ensure the financial control of GP Africa campaigns budget in consultation with the Organisation Director and facilitate reporting to the Board, SMT and ED  

 

5.   Human Resources 

Contribute to the development and implementation of the Human Resources strategy for GP Africa

Ensure the effective induction, performance of human resources through staff coaching, development training and performance reviews

 

6.   Compliance 

Ensure the compliance with all relevant GPI and external requirements in order to optimise the security of the organisation, the health and safety of campaigners and protect the public image of Greenpeace

 

7.   Reporting

Submit monthly reports to the Executive Director 

Report accordingly to the SMT and in consultation with the Executive Director to GP Africa Board

 

8.   Greenpeace International

Organise and maintain sound communication flow and liaise regularly with the GPI Programme Director, Unit and Issue heads, as well as other National and Regional Office (NRO) Campaign Directors and relevant staff 

Assist other NROs in their campaign development and support their campaign-related fundraising events as appropriate

Represent GP Africa to the GPI and NRO programme Directors, Unit and Issues Heads and Ships, Research and Actions Units and at international program and Issues meetings and ensure Africa input into the campaign planning process 

Perform other duties or projects as requested or assigned by the Executive Director.
