Greenpeace condemns SA government's irresponsible lifting of fracking moratorium

Press release - September 7, 2012
Today SA's cabinet lifted the moratorium on fracking in the Karoo, based on report findings that have yet to be made public.

Fracking is just another bad fossil fuel dead end. Greenpeace condemns the lifting of the moratorium on fracking, particularly given the potential impacts on scarce water resources and substantial renewable energy alternatives.

"The South African government should instead be looking to create an Energy [R]evolution, based on renewable energy, which would deliver electricity to all South Africans, and create about 178,000 direct jobs in less than twenty years," said Ferrial Adam, Greenpeace Africa climate and energy campaigner.
