Greenpeace Position on Humanitarian’s Vessel Attacks

Press release - June 4, 2010
Greenpeace condemns the use of force in clashes that led to the death of activists and the injury of activists and soldiers in the Eastern Mediterranean on the morning of 31 May 2010. We are deeply troubled by the loss of lives, and extend our condolences to the families and loved ones of the dead.

Promoting peace and non-violence is at the very core of Greenpeace’s mission, and at the heart of everything we represent and work for. Greenpeace believes in the right to peaceful protest and peaceful activism.

Greenpeace supports the calls for the immediate establishment of an independent investigative committee into the tragic situation.

Greenpeace also supports calls for the lifting of the current blockade on Gaza in order to address pressing humanitarian needs.

Ultimately, the only security guarantee for the Middle East, including Israel and its neighbors, lies in a return to peace negotiations between the state of Israel, the Palestinian Authority and the Arab states and we call on all parties to commit to peace talks for the sake of the region and its future.
