Greenpeace’s René Ngongo wins 2009 Right Livelihood Award

Greenpeace Africa Political Advisor, René Ngongo has been awarded the 2009 Right Livelihood Award - commonly known as the "Alternative Nobel Prize" - for championing forest protection and social justice in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).(1).

This weekend over 60 supporters of Greenpeace Africa created a human banner, which reads “Clean Energy Now” to mark the start of the final countdown to the Copenhagen climate talks in December.

It is well accepted that reducing deforestation is one of the most cost-effective ways of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. A key challenge for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD) is determining the finance mechanism at national level that is efficient, effective and equitable. As high annual rates of tropical deforestation continue, it is proposed that country-level quick-sart ‘Fund’ approaches are the best way forward for rapid financing of REDD and tropical forest protection.
