Greenpeace is an international NGO that was founded in 1971, when a small boat of volunteers and journalists sailed into Amchitka, an area north of Alaska where the US government was conducting underground nuclear tests. It was an act of rebellion against seemingly impossible odds.

Greenpeace Africa opened its offices in 2008 in South Africa. Greenpeace Africa has grown to other regions of the continent with offices in West, East and Central Africa. The organization is currently seeking to employ an Oceans Campaigner to join the Ocean Campaign Unit.

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The Oceans Campaigner will have to ensure on strategic planning and execution of all ocean  campaign project work. At all times portray effective engagement with key stakeholders, including from government, business, media and civil society and coordination of campaign work. The successful candidate will be responsible for but not limited to the following:

 


JOB SPECIFICATION:

  • Develop campaign strategies to influence the public, government and business behaviour to meet campaign objectives, in conjunction with Campaign Teams.
  • Develop and implement strategic campaign projects to meet campaign objectives, in conjunction with campaign project teams, within agreed issue strategies.
  • Lead the implementation of tactics that change public, government and business behaviour and meet campaign objectives, in conjunction with Campaign Teams.
  • Actively represent Greenpeace in public activities, the business, scientific and government sectors, and the media.
  • Develop and lead the production of campaign materials targeted at specific audiences.
  • Liaise with other nationally and internationally focused business, government or non-governmental organisations on issues of relevance to meeting campaign objectives.
  • Participate as an active member in Campaign Teams to achieve campaign objectives.
  • Liaise with Greenpeace International and other Greenpeace offices when relevant to campaign project
  • Prepare reports for the Senior Oceans Campaigns Manager as required.
  • Manage Project, Project budgets and expenditure as directed by the Senior Oceans Campaign Manager

Assist in the strategic development of social, economic, political, legislative and professional campaigns ensuring that Greenpeace Africa seized the strategic opportunities, and is used to influence the development of legislation and national and international practices.
