Since the launch of our Clover Leaf canned tuna campaign a few weeks ago, mysterious magnets have been showing up in supermarkets across the country. Concerned citizens seem to be “sticking it” to Clover Leaf, and placing caution signs on Clover Leaf cans to warn customers that there may be more than just tuna killed to get this fish to a supermarket near you. Are these cans making it through the check-out line? Are consumers and supermarket employees curious about what Clover Leaf plans to do about its lack of commitment to source greener tuna in its cans? I know Greenpeace is.

Hundreds of concerned citizens have already written in to the company to ask what’s up with their bunk sourcing policies. The company has written many back detailing their work through the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF) and their approach to strengthen tuna fisheries management. Some of you may have received one of these letters and if you’re wondering what all the chatter about joining an ISSF committee was about, you can find Greenpeace’s position statement here. Greenpeace is concerned about what Clover Leaf as a company plans to do to change what’s in its cans. We want to see strong commitments made by the company to source from fishing methods that won’t wreak havoc on ocean life including sharks, sea turtles, albatross, baby tuna, and various other species. So far, Clover Leaf is being left behind by other Canadian companies. Stay tuned to the website to see who is working to rid their shelves of unsustainable tuna in the upcoming supermarket ranking report to be released in July.

Meanwhile, earlier this week Greenpeace ran an ad in Metro Vancouver and Metro Toronto, also warning Clover Leaf customer’s of the company’s failure to ensure ocean-friendly tuna in their branded cans. Monday commuters came across the ad below while catching up on a little news and entertainment gossip.

Canadian consumers and supermarket chains should urge Clover Leaf to stop canning ocean destruction and start taking care to ensure their customers aren’t so unlucky after all.
