1] How long have you been volunteering for Greenpeace and why did you choose Greenpeace as a place to offer your time and energy?
I started volunteering in August 2014 so it’s going on eight months now. I chose Greenpeace because it’s an organization that’s passionate and relentless in giving environmental issues a voice. Greenpeace doesn’t shy away from challenges but embraces them. And, at a time when the Earth is seriously suffering and action is needed more than ever before, that’s deeply inspiring to witness and be part of.
2] In general … what motivates you in your volunteerism?
For me, it’s about making a difference. If in some way I can affect positive change by taking an action or adding my voice, then there’s no reason not to. Giving back is universally human and I can’t find a better way to dedicate my time.
3] Do you have a most memorable moment/activity/project at Greenpeace?
Yes, the Act for Arctic campaign. You never know what the response will be when you ask for help. But I was surprised when leaders from around the world needed little convincing from me to support a very worthy cause. Many even went above and beyond by publicizing their involvement via event participation, press releases and social media. Looking back, it’s incredible to know that I can now call several of them friends. We reach out to each other for assistance, guidance and to share stories.
4] Do you have an inspirational message that you want to share with other environmental activists like yourself?
Remember: “You never know how far you can go until you try.” If you reach out, you’ll always find yourself amongst a community of likeminded thinkers and doers. And together you’ll be able to make real change.
