The Saskatchewan farmer who took on Monsanto is coming to BC to carry on his fight against genetically engineered foods. Greenpeace and the Society for a Genetically Engineered (GE) Free BC are kicking off a province-wide speaking tour in Vancouver this Friday, with an evening with Percy Schmeiser and guests. 7pm at the Vancouver Public Library, Alice Mackay Room.
Mr. Schmeiser is a Saskatchewan-based farmer and the recipient of the 2007 Right Livelihood Award for “his courage in defending biodiversity and farmers’ rights” against genetically engineered foods. Mr. Schmeiser has been a champion for farmers’ rights since his canola crops became unwittingly contaminated with Monsanto’s GE seed in 1997. Since then, he has taken his David vs. Goliath story to the Supreme Court of Canada and across the country.
Other speakers at the event include: Colin Palmer (formed first GE Free zone in Canada); Tom Rudge (GE Free Yukon), Josh Brandon (Greenpeace), Phil Vernon (singer/songwriter) and the Raging Grannies.
