Sustainable seafood policies and labeling

Sobeys is pursuing an extensive stakeholder engagement process to help develop their sustainable seafood policy. It's a good step, but so far no date has been set for the release of that policy.

Currently, Sobeys provides no labeling other than what is required by law, with the notable exception of some Ontario stores and the Thrifty chain.

Kudos

  • In development of a sustainable seafood policy
  • BC's Thrifty Foods chain is working particularly hard on labeling and educating their customers
  • Have consulted with environmental organizations for input on sustainability

Criticism

  • Has yet to set a date to make their policy public
  • Have not implemented better labeling across all banners
  • Continues to sell a wide range of unsustainable species from the Redlist
