Metro, Metro Plus, Super C, Food Basics. Metro's Pêcheries Atlantiques division is Quebec's largest distributor of fresh and frozen seafood products.
Redlist species sold
Sells 14 of the 15 Redlist species. Arctic surf clams, Atlantic cod, Atlantic halibut, farmed Atlantic salmon, Atlantic sea scallops, Chilean sea bass, Greenland halibut, haddock, orange roughy, shark, skate, swordfish, tropical shrimps and prawns, and tuna (bluefin, yellowfin). Metro has committed to removing several (six or seven) Redlist species from sale by September 2010.
Sustainable seafood policies and labeling
Metro released a sustainable seafood policy in May 2010, which contains criteria to ensure healthy stocks, responsible fishing and aquaculture methods, traceability from ship to consumer and support for local economies.
An in-store information campaign is scheduled for the fall of 2010, including plans to label fresh fish with common and scientific name, origin and fishing method.
Kudos
- Has saHas committed to using scientific reports to guide decision-making
- Committed to supporting local artisanal fisheries
- Plans to improve fresh fish labelingid country of origin labelling on seafood will be improved.
Criticism
- Policy applies at this point only to fresh and frozen seafood
- Even with commitment to remove 6 or species, Metro still sells at least 7 Redlist species.
- Need to push for better labelling on frozen and canned products.
