Another recent study by Urban Emissions, found that emissions from coal fired power stations in India have been responsible for premature deaths of upto 1,15,000 people between 2011 and 2012. Shiva lives close to the Jharia coal mine and has been diagnosed with tuberculosis. Doctors reported that 60% of the local population around Jharia coal mine suffer from asthma and other respiratory disorders caused by coal mining.
