Joint letter to MoEF on Inviolate Criteria process

Publication - July 15, 2013
A joint letter to Minister of Forest and Environment, Ms. Jayanti Natarajan on the faulty and exclusionary process to determine criteria for the declaration if inviolate forest areas with respect to coal mining.

The letter from individuals and organisations including Greenpeace asks the minister to take action on four main points. 1) Open up the criteria for more detailed scrutiny and debate with an acceptance of the multiple roles played by our forest areas. 2) Uphold the spirit of environment justice and the need to safeguard the livelihoods of forest dependent communities. 3) No further forest diversion for mining should be allowed until a transparent and open process is implemented. 4) The criteria setting process be inclusive and broad-based rather than exclusive and expert dominated.
