Dear M. Pébereau,

I’m writing you this e-mail to express my alarm and concern at learning BNP Paribas invests more heavily in nuclear power projects than any other bank in the world.

I have learned that your bank is currently planning to finance the building of a dangerous nuclear reactor in Angra, Brazil – a project that does not respect international safety standards. 70% of the parts being used for the Angra project date from before Chernobyl!

This calls into question your responsibility as a banking institution, especially when it comes to transparency towards your customers as BNP is using their money to help finance such dangerous projects. BNP’s customers have the right to know what is being done with the money they’ve deposited.

I request that you assume your responsibilities as President of this influential banking group and declare publicly that your bank will not finance the building of the Angra 3 reactor, either through coordinating or participating in the loan, and that you adopt an investment policy that excludes the nuclear sector. I also ask that you be transparent on investments made by your bank – especially those in nuclear.
