Brazilian Amazon forest fires

Photo | 28 October, 2015

The Guajajara people from the Arariboia Indigenous Land in Brazil partner with firefighters from Maranhão state try to stop the fires raging in the indigenous protected lands. This fire is the largest ever recorded in indigenous lands in Brazil. 45 percent of the Amazon rainforest in the Arariboia Indigenous Land has been destroyed. The lack of an effective policy to protect indigenous lands allows illegal logging, and increases the risk that fires like this might happen in other lands, since the degradation caused by illegal logging makes the forests vulnerable to fires. 25/10/2015.
