4th September. Greenpeace volunteer and snowboarder Kurt Leen airs his message to 'Save the Arctic' on the slopes of Mt Ruapehu (2797m), New Zealand's largest active volcano. He was part of small team to hike to the summit which overlooks the crater lake. An international poll revealed that 74 percent of people asked worldwide supported the creation of a protected sanctuary in the international waters surrounding the North Pole. Climbers and mountaineers ascended iconic mountain peaks and buildings all over the world, to demand that governments respond to the global outcry to make the creation of a protected Arctic Sanctuary a top priority.
