Today’s announcement confirming that Japanese whalers are pulling out of the Southern Ocean early this season is great news for the whales.

It’s also rewarding news for the many organisations, governments and people around the world that are working to end commercial whaling.

It may be a bit premature to start popping the champagne corks but today is worth celebrating.

Writing for Discovery News Keiran Mulvaney, who led three Greenpeace expeditions to the Southern Ocean against whaling, says Japan’s decision to withdraw is likely the result of several factors that have been bubbling beneath the surface and have now come to a boil at once.
