Pacific nightmare

Just one ship – the Albatun Tres – can take 3,000 tonnes of fish per trip – more than the total annual catch of some Pacific nations. The world’s biggest tuna boat, known as a super super–seiner, is a symbol of the bloated global fishing fleet, which has a total catch capacity 2.5 times greater than that which could sustainably be harvested from the oceans. Record catches were made last year in the Pacific, including a 40% increase in the purse seine catch of yellowfin tuna and the largest catch ever for the over-fished bigeye tuna.
