Jakarta, 23 April 2018. For almost two months sailing from east of Indonesia, Greenpeace legendary ship,the Rainbow Warrior, has finally set the anchor in Indonesia capital city, Jakarta. Before the Jakarta visit, the ship sailed to campaign for the forest and ocean in Papua and also anchored in Bali to discuss Renewable Energy issues, protesting Benoa Bay reclamation and plastic waste.
Rainbow Warrior drops its anchor in Jakarta with the mission to support renewable energy for Jakarta’s clean air.
The presence of the Rainbow Warrior in Jakarta with the mission to encourage the Indonesia government to tackle the urban environmental issues in their entirety. The acknowledgement of massive environmental issues from air pollution.
Indonesian high dependencies on fossil fuels such as: oil, gas and coal, have worsened the level of air pollution in the capital of the nation. ‘As the centre of the government and the capital city of Indonesia, Jakarta should be the example of for other regions or cities in our country to combat climate change, by shifting to renewable energy,’ said Hindun Malaika, Greenpeace Indonesia Climate and Energy Campaigner.
Jakarta’s problem with its pollution requires policies and calculated strategies and solutions. The approach should start with increasing and strengthening the standard of air quality, a periodic air quality control and set up the target for reducing the source of the pollution. Within transportation sector, the priority should be on increasing mass transportation with electricity as the source.’ Hindun added.
Numerous countries in the world have shifted into the usage of the renewable energy. More than 100 cities all over the world have utilised renewable energy as their source of power at the minimum of 70%. It has been seen as a monumental movement with more than 7,400 mayors globally having decided to fight the climate change by improving their policies in the energy sector.
Greenpeace wishes there will be a collaboration between government and Jakarta citizens to move to renewable energy. The use of rooftop solar panels is the most effective renewable energy for densely populated urban areas such as Jakarta.
If the movement becomes significant for the Jakarta people, Jakarta will generate opportunities for several strands of profit. The benefits, for example, increased number of industries, businesses and investments in this sector that will create green job market opportunities and also boost economic growth.
‘This programme certainly requires financial support starts from the government in provinces, and banking sector will support its financing.’ Hindun said. ‘Rooftop solar panel development will be the contribution from individual or family to fight the climate change and abolish pollution from our air.’
