Greenpeace has been present in Southeast Asia since 2000. Southeast Asia's forests, mountains, rivers and oceans are home to millions of people and thousands of species of trees, plants, birds and mammals. But today, much of these flora and fauna are under threat from climate change, deforestation, pollution and unsustainable industrialized agriculture. The region's rapid industrialization and economic success come at a heavy price.
Through its campaigns, Greenpeace aims to protect the region from further ecological ruin and to serve as a beacon of awareness and action in the interest of environmental protection and sustainable development.
Together with our partner communities and allies in the region, Greenpeace Southeast Asia works to provide opportunities for individuals to participate in campaigns and activities that seek to resolve some of the most pressing environmental problems of our time.
Greenpeace has led successful campaigns in the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia, including preventing the entry of hazardous waste imports and radioactive shipments, campaigning against destructive logging, stopping polluting technologies such as waste incinerators and coal power plants, promoting sustainable agriculture, renewable energy and necessary solutions to key environmental problems.
In Malaysia, Greenpeace has been working on volunteer led projects that look at how we can #StoptheHaze and ensure Zero Deforestation in Indonesia, where burning peatlands blanket Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and many parts of Southeast Asia with the ‘Haze’.
We campaign hard to keep our Oceans healthy and thriving.
Greenpeace is actively involved with local networks and works with like-minded NGOs. For example, in 2014, we launched a report in coalition with local organisations to Stop Lynas (add link)
Many Malaysian’s show their support by joining our public activities such as seminars, exhibitions and film screenings. We host around two public activities per month to meet and get together with our volunteers . Occasionally, we also invite volunteers for training opportunities.
Greenpeace Southeast Asia is also supported by thousands of Malaysian netizens who sign our environmental petitions online. We also have a variety of social media platforms that people can use to take part in our campaigns or to know more about our public activities. These spaces are also run by volunteers who are passionate to save the environment.
