Orangutan Removed From Habitat in Tripa Forest

Paul Hilton's pictures from the recent forest fires in Tripa forest, Aceh Province, Sumatra shown an adult male orangutan tranquilised by officers from the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP) before being captured and relocated to an orangutan rehabilitation centre. Tripa is home to the largest remaining population of endangered Sumatran orangutans. Although Tripa is recognised as an important peatland ecosystem, and is also covered by Indonesia's moratorium on deforestation, nevertheless these forests are being cleared for palm oil plantations.
