What you will need

Although we welcome applications from within Australia, Fiji, PNG and overseas, you will need to:
  • Speak, read and write English very well - perfectly for communications roles. If your written and spoken English is not perfect the roles we can give you are much more limited.
  •
  • Work the equivalent of one month full time, but perhaps spread over a few  months (for example, 20 days over 20 weeks). Longer and/or full time internships are welcome.
  •
  • Be entitled to work in the country where you want to do your internship. To intern in Sydney office, if you are not a citizen or permanent resident, you will need an appropriate visa that allows you to work in Australia: see obtaining a visa. The limitations on work visas for Fiji make it impractical for people who are not residents of Fiji to do internships with Greenpeace in Fiji at present. Similarly, we are only able to offer internships in our Port Moresby office to people already in, and entitled to work in, PNG.
  •
  • Arrange all travel, visas (if any), accommodation and living costs with no contribution from Greenpeace. Unfortunately, Greenpeace cannot provide accommodation or sponsorship for visas, nor can we nominate people for Occupational Training visas.
  •
  • Be suitable for a role that is both available from us and acceptable  to you (and, if relevant, your supporting organisation such as a college, university or sponsor).
  •
  • Make a good faith commitment to the time, terms and conditions of the internship, which will be tailored to your specific situation.
All interns are entitled to a small allowance of $15 in local currency per day.  This should cover public transport to and from the office and a very light lunch.

Obtaining a visa for Australia

A volunteer intern must be entitled to work in the relevant country. Volunteers who are not permanent residents will require an appropriate visa that allows them to work/volunteer in Australia. Unpaid work and volunteering is treated as work in Australia. For more information, visit the Australian Department of Immigration. People on tourist visas may do voluntary work provided it is merely incidental to their tourist experience.

It is relatively easy for all people aged 18-30 years, who are interested in a working holiday of up to 12 months in Australia from Belgium, Canada, Republic of Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Republic of Ireland, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan and United Kingdom to obtain Subclass 417 working holiday visas for Australia. (Information as at 11 March 2009)

It is relatively easy for tertiary educated people from Chile, Iran and Thailand who are interested in a working holiday of up to 12 months in Australia to obtain subclass 462 working holiday visas for Australia

It is much more difficult for people from other countries to obtain an appropriate visa for Australia and you would need to make enquiries of the Australian consulate nearest you.

We regret we are unable to sponsor volunteers for visa purposes in any of the countries in which we operate. We are not able to nominate people for Ocupational Training visas for Australia.
