3 November 2007: Over 100 people with kayaks attempted to halt loaded
coal ships from leaving the port of Newcastle, the world's biggest
coal port. The blockade, organised by Newcastle grassroots
organisation, Rising Tide, was a peaceful action drawing attention to
coal's role in causing climate change. In April 2007, the NSW
Government approved a new coal export terminal and a major expansion
of the existing Kooragang coal terminal. This would see the
Newcastle's coal exports reach 211 million tonnes a year, over three
times the NSW domestic greenhouse pollution from all sources.
