Lignite and coal action in Athens. Greenpeace activists deliver sacks of coal bearing the message “Coal kills” to the European Commission’s offices in Athens. The European Commission is pressing for the liberalization of the Greek power sector, which is currently dominated by the state owned Public Power Corporation’s lignite monopoly. One of the Commission’s initial proposals was to hand over unexploited lignite mines to private investors, thus increasing the share of lignite in the energy mix. Greenpeace urges the Commission to push for liberalization through the decrease of lignite and the rapid uptake of renewable energy investments. See More
