The first step to a clean energy future is ruling out new coal power stations. In fact, when Julia Gillard became Prime Minister, she quickly promised no more dirty coal power stations would be built in Australia. But a taxpayer-funded grant worth $100 million could mean that even though we now have a price on carbon pollution, a new dirty coal-fired power station could be built in Victoria’s Latrobe Valley.
This grant was awarded by the Howard Government back in 2007 to a company called “HRL”, who are proposing to build this new dirty coal power station. However, after failing to meet its conditions after five years, HRL are at risk of losing the grant altogether.
If they do, it could mean the collapse of Australia’s last ever proposed dirty coal-fired power station. Let’s make it happen.
We need your help to stop Australia's newest coal plant going ahead.
The government are currently deciding whether to keep HRL’s dirty coal grant or use that money to support renewable energy instead. We need people to contact the Prime Minister and Energy Minister to call on them to cancel HRL’s grant. Here’s how:
Phone – you can contact the Prime Minister’s office on (02) 6277 7700 and Energy Minister Martin Ferguson’s office on (02) 6277 7930.
Email – you can email Energy Minister Martin Ferguson at
Twitter – by contacting @JuliaGillard and @AustralianLabor
Facebook – by clicking “Like” on Julia Gillard’s Facebook page and leaving a comment on her wall.
All you need to say is that you believe that a real clean energy future is one where we don’t build new dirty coal-fired power stations like HRL and instead put our efforts into supporting renewable energy. Ask them to take away HRL’s $100 million taxpayer-funded grant and use that money to support renewable energy instead.
Here are some ideas for sample tweets:
