Forests
Forests are the lungs of the earth. The air we breathe, the stability of our climate and the rich variety of life depends on forests. They’re home to around two-thirds of all plant and animal species found on land and millions of people depend on them for survival. Without healthy, thriving forests, planet Earth cannot sustain life. Yet our forests are being destroyed at an alarming rate.
As much as 80% of the world's forests have been destroyed or irreparably degraded. Our ancient forests are looted every day to supply cheap timber and wood products to the world. The price for this destruction is escalating climate change, biodiversity loss and community displacement. And it’s happening in our region. Indonesia has lost 72% of its ancient forest, Papua New Guinea 60% and the Solomon Islands is predicted to lose all of them by 2014. Back in Australia, we are part of the problem. Find out more

In the minute it has taken you to read this page, a forest area the size of 35 football pitches has been destroyed. Our Earth's extraordinary and irreplaceable forests need to be protected – urgently. You have the power to end the destruction of our forests. If more people demand good wood from their retailers, there’s more incentive and pressure for the timber industry to provide it.
Help stop illegal imports. Write to the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and ask for urgent government action.
