Maggie Beer, Stephanie Alexander, Kylie Kwong, Justin North, Margaret Fulton, Neil Perry and Stefano de Pieri are among signatories to the GM-Free Chefs Charter.
The chefs, together with Greenpeace, are calling on the federal government to introduce labelling laws for all genetically modified food products.
The campaign is urgent as the first Australian grown crop of GM canola will be harvested and on our supermarket shelves later this year. Canola is used in a wide range of products including bread, margarine and oil, as well as being used in animal feed.
Research shows that the majority of Australian consumers do not want to eat GM food, with more than 90% support ing the full labelling of all products containing GM ingredients. There are also serious concerns about long-term safety and environmental impacts.
