As long as governments favour the polluting fossil fuel industry, renewable energy will struggle to compete in Australian and international energy markets.

Australian state and federal governments talk about taking action against climate change. Then they throw taxpayers' money at the fossil fuel industry, approve more coal and gas developments and give little support to clean energy.

Coal-fired power is the biggest single source of Australia's greenhouse pollution.  Australia also feeds the coal addictions of other countries in our region. We export about three times as much coal as we currently use. In some Asian countries such as Thailand, the impacts on local communities are already in evidence.

Greenpeace calls on governments and industry to create strategies to help coal-reliant communities make the shift to clean energy. Renewable energy is a thriving industry. Just transitions for mining and related communities is a vital part of our clean energy revolution campaign.

Greenpeace also calls on the Australain government to end subsidies to fossil fuel companies.
