Spain is setting impressive standards in wind energy with help from a supportive government.

Over the Easter period of 2008, wind power in Spain was contributing about 28% of the nation's electricity(1), which compares to the amount of baseload energy demand in Victoria. At its peak, the contribution of wind energy into the Spanish grid was 40%!

Spain is a world leader in wind energy, with over 18 times more installed capacity than Australia(2). In July 2007, the Spanish government approved legislation for offshore wind parks along the country's coastline. Spain is one of the three biggest producers of wind power in the EU, along with Germany and Denmark.

It just goes to show what can be done with the right incentives to drive a renewable energy industry.
