Government and industry create 80 per cent of greenhouse gas pollution.

It’s time the fossil fuel industry enhanced its business by producing clean energy solutions. Because renewable energy is one of the fastest growing global industries, countries that support renewables reap substantial benefits.

Newcastle, in the New South Wales Hunter Valley, is the world's largest coal exporting port. We work with local groups to help Hunter Valley communities move from coal dependence to a healthy, sustainable economy.

The federal government spends more than $300 million of our taxes each year giving the coal industry cheap diesel fuel. What would happen if the government took that $300 million and gave it to the renewable energy industry instead? It would effectively double the amount of spending on renewables and would give a major boost to the industry that will help us avoid dangerous climate change. What a great idea!

Local voices for a clean Hunter Valley

Hunter groups working with Greenpeace include Minewatch, Rising Tide the Mineral Policy Institute. These groups want new coalmines banned and a Hunter Sustainable Future Fund to finance research and new industries for the Hunter. A renewable energy industry will create jobs and wealth for the Hunter which will benefit the whole country.

Getting from dirty to clean production is not a new concept. Asbestos factories in Europe switched to producing safer alternatives when the public realised the health impacts of their deadly wares.
