The solutions to our climate emergency currently proposed by the Australian Government fall well short of what is required to avert a climate catastrophe.

Our political leaders pretend that we can "find a balance" between the short-term economic interests of the big polluters and the long-term interests in maintaining a safe climate that is capable of sustaining life. This is madness.

Just as "business as usual" will destroy our future, so too will "politics as usual". We need change. We know that politicians won't act unless the community's voice is united, loud and clear.

Your role in this change

Here are some things you can do to help get the message through and contribute to the change we need.

1. SIGN OUR PETITION
Our petition is calling for a 100% renewable energy future. When you add your name to the list, register for Greenpeace's monthly e-newsletter. You'll receive the latest news from Greenpeace, as well as action alerts on our climate campaign.

2. CONTACT YOUR LOCAL MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT
You can use your voting power to make positive political change. Contact your local Member of Parliament (MP) by telephone, email or post and tell them that you want strong action on climate change now. Even better, arrange a visit to your MP's office.

3. TAKE ACTION IN YOUR COMMUNITY
Across Australia, people are joining community-based climate action groups to campaign together for a safe climate future. Over 150 such groups are operating, sharing skills and resources, holding public meetings and rallies, and making sure their collective voice is heard.

4. SPREAD THE WORD
Be bold and speak up for a safe climate future. Contact your local newspaper or radio station, comment on forums and blogs or make friends with Greenpeace Australia Pacific on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube or MySpace.

5. LIVE GREENER
It's easy. Grow native plants, use energy-efficient light bulbs and swap your car for a bike. Even better, switch your home or business to 100% green power.
