Fishing may be an ancient tradition but sophisticated technology and a global boom in the industry have outstripped nature’s ability to replenish the seas.
The Pacific is at a crossroad. One path leads to sustainable and equitable fisheries, a healthy marine environment, stable and prosperous island communities. The other path leads to the collapse of the major tuna fishery and loss of livelihoods and food supply for the people of the Pacific.
Armed and masked, scouring the oceans, stealing food from hungry families – modern day pirates are a far cry from the glamour of Hollywood movies. But they are a multi billion-dollar reality for many communities that can least afford to be robbed.
It is no secret that as global fish stocks collapse the Pacific Ocean is being preyed upon increasingly by Distant Water Fishing Nations. Our ocean is thus under immense pressure.
