Sydney, Australia — “Today’s green-light announcement for a third new coal loader in Newcastle is a two finger salute to the Australian public who want Australia’s coal exports reined in,” said Stephen Campbell, Greenpeace head of campaigns.

“In a recent Newspoll survey, 73% of Australians said our coal exports should be capped or reduced. The poll showed that the public want to see Australia lead by example on climate change.

“BHP’s expansion of what is already the world’s largest coal export port makes it clear they put their own profits ahead of the urgent need to deal with climate change. While the rest of Australia is talking about how to avoid dangerous climate change, BHP has made it clear it will profit from fuelling it.

“The federal government must immediately review this project and examine the climate change implications, which the previous government studiously ignored. The federal government's credibility in future international climate change negotiations will be compromised by a booming export coal industry.”
