Greenpeace response to announcement of EU energy road map unveiled tomorrow 10 Jan:
'It is heartening to see that the EU is responding to the need for a clean energy revolution for its 500 million residents, said Greenpeace Australia Pacific energy campaigner Catherine Fitzpatrick.
'This puts pressure on the Howard Government to quit coal addiction and nuclear fantasies and instead concentrate on energy efficiency and renewables.
'On 31 December 2006 seven nuclear power stations in Europe were permanently closed.
'And as Germany is poised to end the huge subsidies they pay to keep their eight coal mines operating, Michael Costa is on notice not to take this as an invitation to expand coal exports from Newcastle.
'Greenpeace reports on wind and solar energy have consistently shown that the majority of the world's greenhouse emissions can be reduced through efficiency, renewable energy and demand management.
