Bali, Indonesia — In response to the Australian delegation in Bali last night agreeing to support binding targets of 25-40% cuts on 1990 levels by 2020 for developed countries, Greenpeace energy campaigner Ben Pearson, who is in Bali, said:

“We welcome indications that Australia will back targets for deep greenhouse gas emission cuts by 2020 for developed countries as a basis for negotiating the next Kyoto commitment period, but we need Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to explicitly commit to a 2020 target, in the top end of the 25-40% band, which will guarantee Australia’s emissions begin to fall.

“Australia got a free ride in the first Kyoto commitment period. During his first term Mr Rudd must turn Australia’s emissions around by introducing laws to see them rapidly decline. This means Australia must start to phase out its reliance on coal fired power stations, stop funding fossil fuel companies and halt expansions to its export coal industry.”
