Canberra, Australia — Greenpeace is calling on all parties to stop using climate change as a political football following the Coalition’s pledge to delay the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS).

“You can’t negotiate with climate change,” Greenpeace Campaign Director Steve Campbell said.

“The ALP and the Coalition are engaged in petty political point-scoring while the planet burns. It is hard to tell the difference between the major parties’ policies, and neither addresses the real issue.

“The Australian people deserve better.”

Greenpeace is demanding increased targets for emissions cuts. Those on offer from both parties are an illusory brew of offsets and coal company spin.

“The debate has turned into an unseemly squabble about a doomed policy,” Mr Campbell said.

“We are wasting time we don’t have to confront the climate emergency. We are missing out on delivering a massive boost to the economy and creating hundreds of thousands of new jobs.”

The science is clear and the economy is crying out for change. Our politicians need to show the backbone to tear up the CPRS and deliver policy for Australians and the planet, not the wallets of the big polluters.
