Australia — The Greenpeace vessel Esperanza is on its way to Cairns following a week of peaceful direct actions during the Pacific Islands Forum.

A sustained blockade of the Hay Point Coal Export Terminal ended late last night after Greenpeace successfully stopped coal loading at Hay Point for over 36 hours.

“We came to Hay Point to highlight that Kevin Rudd had a choice to make between the expansion of coal and the future of the Pacific Islands,” said Greenpeace Campaigner Trish Harrup. “Sadly, his abject failure to put hard targets on the table at the Pacific Island Forum shows that he has made his choice and backed coal.”

In the five months until world leaders meet in Copenhagen to decide the fate of the climate, Greenpeace will continue to take peaceful direct action to highlight the injustice of Australia abandoning our Pacific neighbours in support of the big polluters.

“By throwing his support behind the expansion of the coal industry whilst claiming climate leadership,Kevin Rudd’s duplicity has been exposed for all to see,” said Trish Harrup.
