Mackay, Queensland, Australia — UPDATE 12.30pm: Greenpeace activists have succeeded in shutting down Hay Point Export Coal Terminal for over five hours as part of a call to Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to back Pacific Island Leaders’ demands to cut carbon emissions by 45% by 2020.

At 12 noon today, four activists remain locked to the coal loaders.

The Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, is hosting the Pacific Island Forum, where climate change will be high on the agenda.

"Right now, Prime Minister Rudd is masquerading as a climate hero while his policies literally threaten the future of some of the countries he is hosting," Greenpeace climate campaigner Julien Vincent said.

“He simply can’t keep expanding Australia’s export coal industry whilst claiming to be taking strong action on climate.”
