Canberra, Australia — World Environment Day on June 5th this year will see achievement awards going to individuals and groups who made a contribution to protecting the environment and an anti-hero gong to the worst performers.

Wilderness Society Campaigns Director Alec Marr said, “There are over 1,000,000 Australians involved with the environment movement currently, passionately supporting a range of issues from protecting local native vegetation or opposing whaling to supporting clean energy.

“Conservation councils in the states and territories are growing, for example,
- A doubling of Environment Victoria member groups in the last four years to 143 seperate member organisations
- A tripling in membership of the Conservation Council of Western Australia to 75 groups,” said Mr Marr.

Australian Conservation Foundation Executive Director Don Henry said the ACF would present the Peter Rawlinson Award to an individual or group that has made an outstanding voluntary contribution to Australia’s natural environment. The prize is a plaque and $3,000 to be spent on further conservation work.

Mr Henry said, “The award recognises Dr Peter Rawlinson’s contribution as a campaigner, researcher and teacher and his untiring work for many conservation groups, including ACF.”

Greenpeace Australia Pacific CEO Steve Shallhorn said, “Greenpeace is giving based 'local heroes' awards of $500 to volunteer campaigns selected as the best in the state or territory by the conservation council.

“With local heroes all over the country doing their bit, it should encourage the Federal Government to pull its weight and provide support for renewables and other green energy solutions to stop climate change”, said Mr Shallhorn.

The Tassie Tiger award for worst contribution to the environment will be announced tomorrow. It carries no financial prize. The local heroes awards will be announced by Conservation Councils on Sunday June 4th.
