Melbourne, Australia —
Greenpeace Australia Pacific today warned that the detention and planned deportation of US peace activist, Scott Parkin, in Melbourne exposes the potential for abuse inherent in the Howard Government's anti-terrorist laws.
Greenpeace Australia Pacific spokesperson Dan Cass said “At a time when
Australians are already deeply concerned about the Howard Government's
attacks on free speech and the right to protest in the name of fighting
terrorism, the silencing of a peace activist for the 'crime' of
satirising US policy will only confirm many people's worst fears.”
“Scott Parkin has broken no law in Australia and the Government has no right to detain or deport him.”
“Why is the Howard Government wasting precious resources persecuting
Scott Parkin, instead of ensuring the safety of Australians?”
“Scott's mission is to end war and violence, whether perpetrated by
terrorists or by governments. His weapons are humour and satire and his
tools exposure and embarrassment.”
“Is that really what the Howard Government thinks is a threat to
national security? Or are they rather helping the Bush Administration
silence an irritating opponent?”
“Greenpeace has had the pleasure of working with Scott, both in the USA
and on his visit to Australia. We admire his strength in exposing the
corruption and kick-backs of US foreign policy and support his message
of peace and non-violence.”
“We will continue to work to protect our democratic right to free speech and peaceful protest.”
