Sydney/ Madeira — The annual meeting of the International Whaling Commission gets underway today in Madeira, Portugal. Greenpeace is urging the Australian Government to rule out the possibility of another year of closed-door talks unless Japan agrees to stop its Southern Ocean Whale hunt.

“The Australian Government has made a good effort to negotiate with Japan through the IWC process over the last one year. But the Japanese Government has not acted in good faith. It is very clear that Japan is unwilling to compromise on this issue,” said Reece Turner, Greenpeace Australia Whales Campaigner.

“The talks over the past year have clearly failed. Australia and other pro-conservation nations should only continue talks for another five years if Japan agrees to suspend it’s so-called “scientific” whaling hunt, Mr. Turner added.

“It is time for the Australian Government to apply the kind of pressure it promised at the time of election. This means refusing to engage in any more ‘Small Working Group’ negotiations with Japan and initiating legal action unless Japan suspends the southern ocean whaling hunt next summer”, Mr. Turner concluded.
