Greenpeace Australia Pacific CEO Steve Shallhorn said:
"These developments come just as leading Japanese political advisors, like former Ministry for Foreign Affairs spokesman Tomohiko Taniguchi, are now stating publicly that whaling is uneconomic for Japan and damaging to its international reputation."
"The arena of influence to end whaling at this time is in Japan, not on the high seas. That's why this year Greenpeace is focusing all our efforts on building opposition to whaling from within Japan."
"The Australian government support these efforts by raising the matter of the arrest and detention of two activists in Japan who exposed large-scale corruption within the whaling industry."
Junichi Sato and Toru Suzuki are under house arrest and face up to ten years in gaol for intercepting embezzled whale meat bound for the black market in April this year.
