Poznan, Poland — Climate change minister Penny Wong flies to Poznan, Poland, today to take her seat at the ministerial roundtable for the UN climate talks. But will it make any difference?

More than 11,000 delegates and watchers have been in the city for more than a week. But so far there has been little movement towards a global climate action plan to replace the Kyoto Protocol.

Greenpeace has been monitoring the talks and staging vibrant demonstrations calling for governments to get serious on climate change.

Australians voted for Kevin Rudd to act on climate change. We didn’t vote for another term of Howard-era delays.

Leah Wickham, a Greenpeace volunteer from Fiji, led a Global Day of Action protest march from the city square to the conference hall where the talks are being held.

More than 13,000 people from around the world have added their photo to The World Is Watching Flickr group. We’re projecting the images at the conference hall in Poznan all this week.

As climate change ministers from around the world gather for the final days of the meeting, we need to remind them that there is a lot riding on this second week of negotiations.

The key issue for the Poznan meeting is the development of a “shared vision” for the global community to take action on climate change.

It’s important.

This vision will define the goals for the levels of warming that world leaders are prepared to accept. But so far, the Australian government has refused to announce its 2020 target until after the meeting and the 30-strong Australian delegation has remained resolutely silent during the sessions.

Australians have every right to ask what’s going on. They voted for Kevin Rudd and Penny Wong to act on climate change. We didn’t vote for another term of Howard-era delays. The Australian Government has already been embarrassed by countries such as China, India and South Africa calling for them to commit to an emissions reduction target for 2020 of between 25-40%.

It seems like the Rudd Government still hasn’t got the message that the Australian people want real climate action - meaning a 40% emissions reduction target by 2020.

Take action
