Approval was given despite compelling evidence that the Anvil Hill mine will be a social, economic and environmental disaster for the Hunter Valley and NSW.It will displace hundreds of local residents, put enormous strain on local industries, drain already scarce water supplies and contribute an extra 27 million tonnes of greenhouse pollution every year – more than the entire NSW transport sector of four million vehicles.

Greenpeace head of campaigns Stephen Campbell said that Premier Iemma’s approval of Anvil Hill shows that the NSW government does not take climate change seriously.
“This is an absolute disaster for Hunter communities and for the climate. The mine’s approval so soon after the new coal loader at Newcastle Harbour shows that Premier Iemma does not care about climate change as much as he cares about coal profits," Campbell said.
“Premier Iemma and Planning Minister Frank Sartor had a chance to show strong action on climate change by turning down this mine and starting the inevitable move away from coal to clean renewable energy solutions. We have a small window of time to act on climate change and reduce our greenhouse emissions. Enough is enough - it is time to start phasing out of coal while ensuring a just transition for coal communities.”
Greenpeace will continue to support local opposition to the mine through a sustained campaign of peaceful, civil disobedience.
Greenpeace is calling on the government to get serious about climate change by reversing the decision on Anvil Hill and the new coal loader for Newcastle, introducing a moratorium on all new coal mines and new coal fired power stations, and setting a mandatory renewable energy target of 25% by 2020.
