Australia —
Turning 65 is often considered a milestone in one’s life, a time for reflection. Today Prime Minister John Howard had plenty of opportunity to reflect on his longstanding and increasingly controversial refusal to ratify the Kyoto Protocol. On the occasion of his 65th birthday, he was joined on his morning walk by about 20 Greenpeace activists with a strong message: "Don't walk away from Kyoto."
Mr Howard must also reflect that scientists warn if climate change goes
unchecked, we could witness the demise of the Great Barrier Reef, the
disappearance of our ski fields, and the extinction of up to a quarter
of Australia’s species.
"Climate change is already hurting Australia by making the drought more
severe and damaging our coral reefs, yet the Government’s policy will
not protect Australia from climate change,” said Greenpeace climate
campaigner Gareth Walton.
“John Howard’s continuing refusal to join over 160 other countries in
ratifying the Kyoto Protocol represents all that is wrong with the
Government’s response to climate change.” The Kyoto Protocol is the
only global agreement to tackle climate change.
Australia can be protected from climate change while creating new
sustainable jobs and green industries. Unfortunately, the Government
seems more interested in looking after major polluters than in the
interests of all Australians.
“To protect Australia from climate change, greenhouse pollution must be
reduced by at least 60 per cent by 2050. Greenpeace calls on both Mr
Howard and Mr Latham to commit to reduce greenhouse pollution by 60 per
cent by 2050 in order to protect Australia from climate change.”
Take Action!
Call on Mr Howard and Mark Latham to commit to making deep cuts in greenhouse pollution of 60 per cent or more.
