Poznan, Poland — The world has just one year to meet a critical deadline - to agree a plan to avoid catastrophic climate change.

Global leaders need to agree to a plan that will carry the Kyoto Protocol into a second phase. So far, there has been little progress.

There is a lot hanging on UN climate talks in Poznan, Poland, from 1-12 December 2008.  These talks are the last opportunity to lay groundwork before the crunch time for real decisions comes in Copenhagen, December 2009.

But Poznan is being been billed as just a meeting about another meeting.

Australia’s climate change minister, Penny Wong, has described Poznan as "a working conference... [which]... will bring together all the countries of the world to …see where we've got to and to continue to push forward on the work agenda."

But these are meaningless words. Australia needs to get real in Poznan and show what we're prepared to do to stop the climate crisis.

It's up to us to make sure our pollies make progress at the Poznan talks.

Politicians are talking down chances for progress because of the global economic meltdown, the timing of the US election and short attention spans by most governments.

Three Greenpeace campaigners from the Australia Pacific region will be in Poznan closely tracking the talks. Stay tuned for our Poznan blog and ways to take action here: www.greenpeace.org.au/poznan
