Australia — The 2004 election is deadly serious for the environment. The decisions made by whoever wins Government and controls the Senate will be crucial for our climate, Tasmania's forests and the health of our rivers.

Call on Mr Howard and Mark Latham to commit to reduce greenhouse pollution by 60 per cent or more.

The election climate

Drought and water restrictions, bushfires, coral bleaching, floods.

Climate change and its impacts are more and more a top-of-mind issue for Australians.

With a Federal Election just weeks away, both Prime Minister John Howard and Opposition Leader Mark Latham have acknowledged that the environment, and climate change in particular, is a key issue for voters.

While Labor's climate policy is better than the Coalitions, both need to improve their policies to protect Australia from climate change.

The latest science shows that Australia's greenhouse pollution needs to be reduced by at least 60% below 1990 levels by 2050 if Australia is going be protected from climate change.

It will require strong and visionary political leadership to get there. But it's not impossible - the UK Government has already committed to such a target.

Being a global issue that reaches to the core of our society and economy, it will take serious government action to truly tackle the causes of climate change. That's why Greenpeace and other environment groups are working hard during this election campaign to get the political parties to improve their policies on climate change. We're also helping Australians find out more about what needs to be done and how they can use the election to help drive change.

Greenpeace calls on both major parties to commit to reducing greenhouse pollution by at least 60% by 2050. This is the measure by which they should be judged because only that will protect Australia from climate change.
