Melbourne, Australia — Greenpeace 'comoonicators' have taken action against Devondale dairy products, which may contain genetically engineered (GE) contamination.

Dressed in cow suits, activists entered the Melbourne headquarters of Murray Goulburn (which makes Devondale). They refused to leave without meeting managing director, Stephen O’Rourke. Other cows unfurled banners outside, reading ‘Feed me GE free’ and ‘Devondale – Say No to GE Milk’. Three cows were arrested and later released.

Watch what the cows got up to below.

Murray Goulburn, Australia's largest dairy company, claims its dairy products are GE-free. But its dairy herds are fed up to 5% GE feed, which means GE may be sneaking into our milk.

Murray Goulburn also supports lifting the current moratoria on GE food crops, saying farmers have a right to choose.

Says Greenpeace GE campaigner, Louise Sales, "If the GE food crop bans are lifted, Australian dairy farmers will have no choice but to accept GE feedstock.

Australia will lose its lucrative GE-free status. Once released into the environment, GE crops can't be contained and will lead to the inevitable contamination of our fields and our food.

Greenpeace calls on Murray Goulburn to:

  • support the extension of state bans on GE food crops
  • stop GE contamination of its Devondale products

In other capital cities, Greenpeace 'comoonicators' today kept supermarket consumers informed, asking them to pressure Murray Goulburn to get GE out of Devondale dairy products and support food crop bans.
