Australia —
GE canola is promiscuous and polluting. Scientists can't predict how genetically engineered organisms will interact with the natural environment – but it is certain they can reproduce and cross breed.
If GE canola is approved and released in Australia, the decision cannot
be reversed. Legal action is underway against Monsanto in Canada, in
response to the near total GE contamination of canola fields.
Canada used to export canola to lucrative European markets, which have
since rejected GE foods. In 2000-1, Canada's canola exports to Europe
fell to zero.
Australian exports face a similar fate. Worse, our "clean and green"
agriculture image will be seriously threatened if GE canola is approved.
Australian consumers are overwhelmingly rejecting GE, too. A recent
poll by Taylor Nelson Sofres (April 2002) shows that 68% of Australians
would be less likely to buy a food if they knew it had been genetically
engineered.
