Last week, the NSW government announced it would extend the ban on genetically engineered (GE) crops until 2008. But the GE news is not all good. Genetic contamination has shown up in all Australian states.
In June, Bayer's GE canola, Topas, was discovered in Victoria and South Australia. Now it seems Monsanto’s Roundup Ready canola has contaminated crops in NSW, WA and Victoria. In NSW, 15 of 20 trial plots were destroyed and contamination levels appear to be as high as 20 per cent.
Such high level genetic contamination is almost unheard of. Announcing an extended ban on GE crops can't hide the fact that contamination may already be out of control.
