Whaling ban stays but Japan wins a key vote

In a stunning turnaround from expectations, pro-whaling nations have narrowly lost five key votes at the International Whaling Commission (IWC) meeting. However, they have won an ominous "St Kitts Declaration" vote. Although the moratorium on commercial whaling will not be overturned, it is a setback for whale conservation and a reminder that whales are not yet safe.

Will these whales be watched or hunted?

Australia's whale watching season is in full swing as wonderful humpbacks journey up our east coast. But if Japan gets its way at the International Whaling Commission meeting, these same humpbacks will be hunted and killed next year.
